World Cup Memories from the 70s
It’s qualifying for Argentina 78. Scotland play Wales in England. Of course they do.
Hello
Every month, in conjunction with
I’ll be bringing you a throwback edition covering football events that happened before Fitbatweets started in 2018. Today we’re going back to what is about the first football match I can really remember. Well, I remember the second goal that’s for sure. This game is also memorable for the Hand of Jaws and the general love affair between Joe Jordan and the referee. For this one, I’ve enlisted the help of the commentator on the night, the legendary Archie McPherson.
Please do enjoy and feedback in the comments if you like.
Not a great amount of action in the first half until a Wales mistake leaves Kenny right through on Dai Davies who hacks him.
See that’s what happens when you don’t fall over when you’re fouled.
Into the second half and a wonderful chance for Wales as John Toshack spanks a beauty that forces Alan Rough into a fantastic save.
Yes I know, Alan Rough and save are rarely in the same sentence.
A long through ball finds the Welsh defence all at sea again. Joe Jordan nips in behind them and then goes for the ball whilst in the clutches of the keeper. High and late from Joe.
Nothing malicious though, he’s just not that kind of player.
Or is he?
A little over 10 minutes to go. A long throw in to the Welsh box. HANDBALL!
How did Archie see it?
Wow, that’s some biased commentary Arch. Never mind, penalty to Scotland it is.
Don Masson steps up.
YES! Dai Davies goes for a wander the other way and Scotland have one foot on the plane.
87 minutes gone and Wales are all over the bloody place. Martin Buchan finds himself in acres of space on the right. His cross is right on the money…..
Sensational from Dalglish. Game over. The Tartan Army goes mental.
Over to you again Archie.
Cheers
Keith

Btw the Archie drawing is a thing of beauty love that 😍😍😍
Changed days indeed. I'm certain today's Cymdeithas Bêl-droed Cymru would never pick a stadium outside Wales (that's easy for you to say!) Serves them right. Putting money first more or less says, "We might not qualify, but we'll earn a couple of quid." Not a great motivator. And it ended up full of Scottish fans as a result. Not one of them saw a handball. Did democracy not exist in those days?
